Tennessee EV Fees and Incentives (2026)
Tennessee charges $200 a year for an electric car and $100 for a hybrid or plug-in hybrid, collected at renewal rather than first registration. The amounts follow a set schedule, with inflation adjustments starting in 2028.
From January 1, 2027, the electric-car fee rises to $274 at renewal; hybrids and plug-in hybrids stay at $100. Both are adjusted for inflation each year from 2028.
No state-funded rebate or tax credit for buying an electric car is open in Tennessee as of October 2026; check your electric utility for local rebates.
The federal clean vehicle tax credits (up to $7,500 for a new EV, up to $4,000 for a used EV, and the commercial clean vehicle credit) ended for vehicles acquired after September 30, 2025. A vehicle still qualifies if a binding written contract was signed and a payment made by that date, even if it was delivered later; the credit is then claimed for the year of delivery.
