About Savings & Investment Calculators

These tools answer the money questions that come up before you ever talk to a bank or broker. Use the Compound Interest Calculator to see how a balance grows once earnings start earning their own returns, and the Inflation Calculator to check whether that growth actually beats rising prices. The Emergency Fund Calculator turns the usual "three to six months of expenses" guideline into a real dollar target, while the Savings Goal Calculator works backward from a down payment or wedding to a monthly amount.

When you're comparing where to park cash, the CD Calculator shows what a fixed term yields at a given APY, and the I-Bond Calculator estimates returns on U.S. Treasury Series I savings bonds, whose composite rate the Treasury resets every May and November to track CPI inflation. For taxable accounts, the Tax-Equivalent Yield Calculator lines a muni bond up against a taxable one once your federal bracket (10% to 37%) is factored in.

Investors lean on the Net Worth Calculator for an annual snapshot, the Dividend and ROI Calculators to judge what a holding actually returns, and the Dollar Cost Averaging Calculator to model buying on a fixed schedule rather than timing the market.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the interest I earn in a savings account or CD taxable?
Yes. Interest from savings accounts, CDs, and money market accounts is taxed as ordinary income at your federal rate, and most states tax it too. Your bank reports it to the IRS on Form 1099-INT once you earn $10 or more in a year, and CD interest is taxable in the year it's credited even if you don't withdraw it until the term ends.
What's the difference between APR and APY when comparing savings products?
APY (annual percentage yield) includes the effect of compounding, while APR (annual percentage rate) does not, so APY is the number to compare across savings accounts and CDs. Two accounts with the same nominal rate can have different APYs depending on whether interest compounds daily, monthly, or annually. Federal Truth in Savings rules require banks to disclose APY so you can compare offers on equal footing.
How are I bonds and CDs taxed differently?
Interest on a Treasury I bond is exempt from state and local income tax and is only subject to federal tax, which you can defer until you cash the bond or it stops earning after 30 years. CD interest, by contrast, is taxed at both the federal level and by most states in the year it's earned. I bonds bought through TreasuryDirect also have a one-year minimum hold, and cashing one before five years costs you the last three months of interest.
Why does the Tax-Equivalent Yield Calculator make a lower muni-bond rate look better than a higher taxable yield?
Interest from most municipal bonds is exempt from federal income tax, and often from your state's tax if you live where the bond was issued, so a muni's stated yield is what you actually keep. A taxable bond's yield gets reduced by your federal bracket, which ranges from 10% to 37%. The calculator grosses the muni yield up to the taxable yield you'd need to match it after tax, which is why a 4% muni can beat a 5% taxable bond in a high bracket.
Is the money in my savings account or CD safe if the bank fails?
Deposit accounts including savings, checking, money market deposit accounts, and CDs are insured by the FDIC up to $250,000 per depositor, per insured bank, for each ownership category. Credit union accounts carry equivalent NCUA coverage at the same limit. That insurance covers cash deposits but not investments like stocks, mutual funds, or I bonds, which are not bank products and can lose value.
