North Carolina EV Fees and Incentives (2026)

North Carolina adds $214.50 a year for an electric car and $107.25 for a plug-in hybrid at registration and each renewal; hybrids pay nothing extra. The fees are adjusted for inflation every four years.

The next inflation adjustment is due July 1, 2028; the new amounts have not been published.

No state-funded rebate or tax credit for buying an electric car is open in North Carolina as of October 2026; check your electric utility for local rebates.

The federal clean vehicle tax credits (up to $7,500 for a new EV, up to $4,000 for a used EV, and the commercial clean vehicle credit) ended for vehicles acquired after September 30, 2025. A vehicle still qualifies if a binding written contract was signed and a payment made by that date, even if it was delivered later; the credit is then claimed for the year of delivery.
