Alabama EV Fees and Incentives (2026)

Alabama adds $203 a year for a battery-electric car and $103 for a plug-in hybrid on top of regular registration; hybrids pay nothing extra. Instead of tracking inflation, the fee rises by $3 every four years.

Under the $3-every-four-years rule, the fee rises to $206 for electric cars and $106 for plug-in hybrids on July 1, 2027. The state has not announced the new amounts yet.

No state-funded rebate or tax credit for buying an electric car is open in Alabama as of October 2026; check your electric utility for local rebates.

The federal clean vehicle tax credits (up to $7,500 for a new EV, up to $4,000 for a used EV, and the commercial clean vehicle credit) ended for vehicles acquired after September 30, 2025. A vehicle still qualifies if a binding written contract was signed and a payment made by that date, even if it was delivered later; the credit is then claimed for the year of delivery.
