Alabama 529 State Tax Benefit (2026)

Deduction of up to $5,000 ($10,000 on a joint return), per taxpayer.

Other states' plans don't qualify, but money rolled over from another state's 529 into CollegeCounts counts toward the deduction, and the rollover isn't taxed in Alabama.

Deduct contributions to CollegeCounts or the PACT prepaid program. The $10,000 joint limit applies only if both spouses contribute; if only one does, the limit is $5,000. On a nonqualified withdrawal, the amount withdrawn plus 10% is added to Alabama income. CollegeCounts lists K-12 expenses as qualified.
