Georgia Gas Tax Overview

Georgia’s state tax on gasoline is 34.05¢ a gallon and 38.05¢ on diesel, the rate in force since January 1, 2026. That is the 18th-highest state gasoline tax of the 50 states and DC. Adjusted each January 1 under the state's indexing law; rates are published in a Revenue Department bulletin.

With the federal 18.4¢, a gallon of gasoline carries 52.45¢ of per-gallon tax, so a 15-gallon fill-up includes about $7.87 of fuel tax whatever the pump price. Local sales taxes (2% to 5% by locality, most often 3%) are prepaid on a state-set average price of $3.00 a gallon from July 1, 2026. That works out to about 6¢–15¢ a gallon (9¢ at 3%). There is no local per-gallon gas tax; county and city sales taxes reach fuel through the prepaid local tax.

The rate is due to be reset on January 1, 2027; the new figure is not published yet.
