Minnesota Gas Tax Overview

Minnesota’s state tax on gasoline is 34.7¢ a gallon and 34.7¢ on diesel, the rate in force since January 1, 2026. That is the 16th-highest state gasoline tax of the 50 states and DC. Excise adjusted for inflation each January 1; surcharge reset each July 1; cleanup fee charged only when its fund runs low.

With the federal 18.4¢, a gallon of gasoline carries 53.1¢ of per-gallon tax, so a 15-gallon fill-up includes about $7.96 of fuel tax whatever the pump price.

Scheduled change: from November 1, 2026 the rate becomes 32.7¢ on gasoline and 32.7¢ on diesel.
