Vermont Gas Tax Overview
Vermont’s state tax on gasoline is 33.84¢ a gallon and 32¢ on diesel, the rate in force since October 1, 2026 (diesel since July 1, 2026). That is the 19th-highest state gasoline tax of the 50 states and DC. Gasoline assessments reset quarterly from average retail prices; the 12.1¢ base and the diesel rates are fixed.
With the federal 18.4¢, a gallon of gasoline carries 52.24¢ of per-gallon tax, so a 15-gallon fill-up includes about $7.84 of fuel tax whatever the pump price.
Scheduled change: from January 1, 2027 the rate becomes unchanged on gasoline and 32¢ on diesel.
