DC has no extra EV fee. A new battery-electric car under 5,000 lb registers for a reduced $40 a year for its first two years, then pays the weight-based rate with a 1,000-lb weight deduction.

No state-funded rebate or tax credit for buying an electric car is open in District of Columbia as of October 2026; check your electric utility for local rebates.

DC has no EV purchase rebate. EVs lost their full title excise tax exemption in February 2025 and now pay a reduced 1% to 3% of value.

The federal clean vehicle tax credits (up to $7,500 for a new EV, up to $4,000 for a used EV, and the commercial clean vehicle credit) ended for vehicles acquired after September 30, 2025. A vehicle still qualifies if a binding written contract was signed and a payment made by that date, even if it was delivered later; the credit is then claimed for the year of delivery.
