Louisiana 529 State Tax Benefit (2026)

Deduction of up to $2,400 ($4,800 on a joint return), per beneficiary. Only contributions to START Saving Program (Louisiana Student Tuition Assistance and Revenue Trust) count; money put into another state’s plan earns no Louisiana deduction or credit.

Unused room carries forward: if deposits fall below $2,400 ($4,800 joint), the difference raises later years' limits, with no time limit.

Only the START account owner can claim the exemption, per beneficiary. START K12 accounts have a separate exemption of $1,200 ($2,400 joint) per beneficiary. Low-income beneficiaries (family AGI under $30,000 or eligible for free lunch) can get a double exclusion on certain accounts.
