West Virginia Gas Tax Overview

West Virginia’s state tax on gasoline is 35.7¢ a gallon and 35.7¢ on diesel, the rate in force since January 1, 2026. That is the 15th-highest state gasoline tax of the 50 states and DC. Variable part reset each January 1 at 5% of the average wholesale price; it cannot fall below 15.2¢.

With the federal 18.4¢, a gallon of gasoline carries 54.1¢ of per-gallon tax, so a 15-gallon fill-up includes about $8.12 of fuel tax whatever the pump price.

The rate is due to be reset on January 1, 2027; the new figure is not published yet.
