How is child support calculated in Florida?

Florida applies the Income Shares model. Both parents' gross incomes are combined and run through a guideline schedule that yields a basic monthly obligation. Each parent's share of that obligation is prorated by their percentage of combined income.

The calculation typically adjusts for: (1) work-related childcare, (2) the child's portion of health-insurance premiums, (3) extraordinary medical expenses, and (4) parenting time when overnights cross a state-defined threshold (e.g., 20%–40% depending on jurisdiction). Pre-existing support orders for other children, alimony paid, and mandatory retirement contributions also reduce gross income before the formula applies.

Guideline figures are presumptive — judges may deviate upward or downward when applying them would be unjust given the child's needs, the parents' resources, or other relevant factors. Florida courts retain final discretion. Always confirm the current guideline tables and worksheet with the Florida child support agency or family court.

Florida Child Support Guidelines (Florida Statutes §61.30)

Florida uses the Income Shares model under Fla. Stat. §61.30, with the Basic Child-Support Schedule updated periodically (2017 was the most recent statutory revision). Florida has unique provisions for "substantial parenting time" — at least 20% overnights — that proportionally reduce the obligation. The Department of Revenue Child Support Program serves over 800,000 cases; payments process through the State Disbursement Unit.

How is child support calculated in Florida in 2026?

Florida uses the Income Shares model under Florida Statutes section 61.30, combining both parents' net monthly incomes and applying the Basic Child-Support Schedule by number of children. The Schedule was last revised in 2017. Health insurance premiums, work-related child care, and uninsured medical expenses are added on top and split proportionally to income. The Florida Department of Revenue Child Support Program serves more than 800,000 cases through its State Disbursement Unit.

Does Florida reduce child support for substantial parenting time?

Yes. Under Florida Statutes 61.30(11)(b), if the noncustodial parent has at least 20% of overnights (about 73 nights/year), the formula switches to the gross-up method which proportionally reduces the obligation. The reduction grows as overnights increase toward 50/50. Florida is one of the more generous states for timeshare credits compared to states that require 30%+ before any adjustment applies.

Until what age does Florida child support continue?

Florida child support generally ends when the child turns 18, but extends to age 19 if the child is still in high school and reasonably expected to graduate before turning 19. There is no automatic college support obligation in Florida — courts cannot order post-majority educational support absent written agreement. Support for a dependent adult child with a disability that began before age 18 may continue indefinitely under Florida Statutes 743.07.
