Washington Income Tax Overview

Washington has no traditional income tax, but imposes a 7% tax on capital gains over $278,000 (2025 standard deduction). An additional 2.9% applies to gains over $1 million, for a top rate of 9.9%.

Washington Paid Family and Medical Leave (PFML) provides up to 12 weeks of paid leave funded by employer and employee premiums. WA Cares Fund provides long-term care benefits funded by a 0.58% employee payroll premium.

Effective July 1, 2025, the estate tax exemption increases from $2,193,000 to $3,000,000 with inflation indexing starting in 2026. Estate tax rates range from 10% to 20%.

Washington's minimum wage of $16.66/hr is among the highest in the nation. Seattle's minimum wage is $20.76/hr for all employers. Tipped employees receive the full minimum wage.

The state sales tax of 6.5% is supplemented by local taxes that can bring combined rates above 10% in some areas. Most groceries and prescription drugs are exempt.
