Ohio Sales Tax Guide
Ohio's statewide sales tax rate is 5.75%, but almost nobody pays exactly that at the register. Each of Ohio's 88 counties adds its own permissive sales tax, and transit authorities can layer on more, so combined rates around the state typically land somewhere in the 6.5% to 8% range depending on where you shop. The Ohio Department of Taxation sets the base rate and publishes the county-by-county combined rates that retailers must collect.
What's taxable follows familiar lines. Most tangible goods, prepared food, and many services are taxed, while groceries for home consumption are exempt, as are prescription drugs. The grocery exemption is why a cart of raw ingredients rings up tax-free but a hot deli sandwich or restaurant meal does not. When you buy from an out-of-state seller that doesn't charge Ohio tax, the state's use tax applies at the same combined rate, and Ohio expects buyers to report it, commonly on the annual IT 1040 return.
