New Jersey Sales Tax Guide
New Jersey charges a single statewide sales tax of 6.63% and, unlike most states, lets no county or town add a local surcharge on top. That means the rate at the register is the same in Newark, Cherry Hill, or a shore town, which makes a New Jersey total far easier to predict than in states where the rate shifts every few miles.
The base is also narrower than many shoppers expect. Most groceries, prescription drugs, and many over-the-counter medicines are exempt, and clothing and footwear are generally not taxed at all, a long-standing New Jersey feature. Prepared restaurant food, electronics, furniture, and most household goods are taxable. When you buy from an out-of-state seller that does not collect New Jersey tax, the state expects you to pay an equivalent use tax directly to the Division of Taxation, typically reported on your annual return.
