Indiana Gas Tax Overview
Indiana’s state tax on gasoline is 38¢ a gallon and 64¢ on diesel, the rate in force since July 1, 2026. That is the 13th-highest state gasoline tax of the 50 states and DC. Raised each July 1 through 2027 by an index, up to 1¢ (gasoline) or 2¢ (diesel) a year; never decreases.
With the federal 18.4¢, a gallon of gasoline carries 56.4¢ of per-gallon tax, so a 15-gallon fill-up includes about $8.46 of fuel tax whatever the pump price. A 7% gasoline use tax is charged on the statewide average retail price and set monthly: 23.9¢ a gallon in September 2026 and 23.8¢ in October 2026. Diesel is no longer subject to the 7% sales tax.
The rate is due to be reset on July 1, 2027; the new figure is not published yet.
