Modified Adjusted Gross Income (MAGI)
taxAlso known as: MAGI, modified AGI
Updated · Written and reviewed by Konstantin Iakovlev
Detailed explanation
MAGI is not a single number — it depends on which provision you're testing. For Roth IRA contributions, MAGI = AGI + traditional IRA deduction + foreign earned income exclusion. For ACA premium tax credits, MAGI = AGI + tax-exempt interest + non-taxable Social Security + foreign income. For Medicare IRMAA, MAGI = AGI + tax-exempt interest. Most calculations land within $1K-5K of AGI for typical filers, but high earners with substantial muni bond interest or foreign income may see larger differences.
