Child Tax Credit (CTC)
benefitsAlso known as: CTC, Child Tax Credit
Updated · Written and reviewed by Konstantin Iakovlev
Detailed explanation
Each qualifying child must be under 17, your dependent, U.S. citizen/national/resident with SSN issued before tax-return due date. Lived with you more than half the year. Did not provide more than half their own support. The credit is partially refundable — up to $1,700 of the $2,000 returns as a check even if you owe no tax. Above $200K/$400K AGI, the credit phases out by $50 for every $1,000 above threshold. Credit for Other Dependents ($500, non-refundable) covers dependents who don't qualify for CTC (e.g., 17-year-old high school senior).
