Colorado Tax Overview
A Colorado paycheck starts with your gross pay, then sheds several layers before it lands in your account. The federal pieces apply everywhere: federal income tax based on your W-4, Social Security at 6.2% on wages up to the $184,500 wage base, and Medicare at 1.45% with no cap. On top of that, Colorado withholds a flat 4.4% state income tax on your Colorado taxable income, so a higher salary doesn't push your state rate up the way it would in a bracketed state.
Colorado also runs a Family and Medical Leave Insurance program (FAMLI), and that premium comes out of your check too, typically split between you and your employer. The state has no separate disability insurance deduction. After taxes, your net pay still reflects voluntary items you choose, such as 401(k) contributions up to the $24,500 deferral limit and pretax health premiums, both of which lower the wages your income taxes are figured on. Pay frequency changes the size of each check but not the annual math.
On a $60,000 salary, Colorado's flat 4.4% income tax comes to about $1,932 a year for a single filer after the state's own deductions and exemptions — on top of $4,590 in federal FICA, which is the same in every state. 12 of the 42 states that tax income have a lower top rate than Colorado's 4.4%.
The state minimum wage is $15.16/hr , above the federal $7.25 floor — about $31,533 a year at 40 hours a week. Colorado also withholds for paid family leave, which most states do not.
