California Income Tax Overview
California's income tax is the steepest in the nation at the top, climbing through a graduated schedule to a 13.3% marginal rate on the highest slices of income. Graduated means each band of your earnings is taxed at its own rate, so the headline 13.3% only ever touches dollars above the top threshold, never your whole salary. The standard deduction for a single filer is just $5,706, far below the federal figure, which leaves more of a typical income exposed to state tax than people expect.
The Franchise Tax Board collects this tax, and it sits squarely on top of whatever you owe the IRS, not in place of it. Residents are taxed on all income wherever it's earned; nonresidents and part-year residents owe on income traced to a California source, like wages from a job in the state. Part of that 13.3% ceiling is a 1% surcharge on income above $1 million earmarked for mental-health services, which is the piece that pushes California's top rate past every other state's.
