How It Works

The price you pay per page is where inkjet and laser printers really diverge, and this tool puts the two side by side using 2026 consumable prices. Seeing that figure clearly helps whether you're shopping for a new machine or trying to rein in what you already spend on printing.

Cost per page is built as (Cartridge Price / Page Yield) + (Paper Ream Price / Sheets per Ream). Color simply sums the price and yield of each individual cartridge. The result is a single, comparable number for both black-and-white and color output.

Paper is the line item most people leave out, and it can swing the per-page total more than they expect. Stated page yields deserve the same skepticism, since they assume light coverage; a page heavy with graphics burns through far more ink or toner than plain text does.

Example: Small Business Printing

  1. 1 Input: Printer Type: Inkjet. Black Cartridge Price: $35.00. Black Cartridge Page Yield: 400 pages. Color Cartridge Price (CMY combined): $60.00. Color Cartridge Page Yield: 300 pages. Paper Ream Price: $12.00. Sheets per Ream: 500.
  2. 2 Calculation: Black & White Cost per Page = ($35.00 / 400) + ($12.00 / 500) = $0.0875 + $0.024 = $0.1115. Color Cost per Page = ($60.00 / 300) + ($12.00 / 500) = $0.20 + $0.024 = $0.224.
  3. 3 Result: Your estimated black and white printing cost is $0.11 per page. Your estimated color printing cost is $0.22 per page.
  4. 4 Context: A comparable laser printer might have a black toner cost of $0.04 per page and color toner cost of $0.15 per page. This highlights the potential long-term savings with laser for high-volume printing, despite a higher initial purchase price.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it cheaper to print with inkjet or laser?
Laser printers have a higher upfront cost ($150-400) but lower per-page cost (1-3 cents for black and white). Inkjet printers are cheaper to buy ($50-200) but cost 5-10 cents per page. If you print more than 100 pages per month, laser saves money.
How much does it cost to print a page at home?
Black and white laser printing costs 1-3 cents per page. Color laser runs 8-15 cents. Inkjet black and white costs 5-8 cents and color inkjet 15-25 cents per page. These estimates include ink or toner and paper costs.
How many pages can I print from one ink cartridge?
Standard inkjet cartridges print 200-400 pages, while high-yield cartridges print 500-1,000 pages. Laser toner cartridges last 2,000-5,000 pages for standard and up to 10,000 for high-yield versions. Actual yield depends on coverage percentage.
