How It Works
Passer rating boils a quarterback's passing line down to a single efficiency number, which is what makes it useful for stacking one performance against another. Because the formula is fixed, it travels cleanly across games and seasons, the 2026 NFL season included, giving you a common yardstick for comparing QBs.
Four inputs drive the result: completion percentage, yards per attempt, touchdowns per attempt, and interceptions per attempt. Each is converted to a value somewhere between 0 and 2.375. Those four values are added together, multiplied by 100, and divided by 6 to produce the rating, which the formula caps at 158.3.
Feed the calculator raw totals rather than rates: attempts, completions, yards, touchdowns, and interceptions, not the percentages derived from them. Read the scale in the right direction too, since a higher number means a stronger outing, and 158.3 stands as the perfect score.
Example: Patrick Mahomes in a hypothetical 2026 game
- 1 Input the following stats for a quarterback: 25 completions, 35 attempts, 320 passing yards, 3 touchdowns, and 1 interception.
- 2 The calculator processes these inputs through the NFL passer rating formula. It first calculates the individual component scores for completion percentage, yards per attempt, touchdowns per attempt, and interceptions per attempt.
- 3 The calculated passer rating for this performance is 118.9.
- 4 A passer rating of 118.9 indicates an excellent performance, well above the league average, demonstrating high efficiency in passing, similar to top-tier quarterbacks like Patrick Mahomes in a strong 2026 showing.
